Flooding in Nan Province Claims Two Lives as Preparations for Peak Water Levels Underway

Nan: Flooding in Nan province has claimed two lives and severely affected seven subdistricts, impacting over 8,000 households. Military and rescue teams have been mobilized to evacuate residents in preparation for peak water levels tonight.

According to Thai News Agency, the flood situation in Nan province remains worrying after continuous heavy rainfall, resulting in flash floods and landslides in many areas. Relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation, especially in low-lying areas and along the Nan River. Initially, two fatalities have been reported. The first, in Pua district, is that of Mr. Sinchai Kangkhat, 58, residing at house number 83, Village No. 8, Ban Silaphet, Silaphet Subdistrict, Pua District, Nan Province. He was a bedridden patient. Officials are currently handling the necessary procedures. The second fatality occurred in Thawang Pha district. The Phetkasem Foundation, while assisting in the evacuation of residents, discovered the body of a male, approximately 45-50 years old, in Village No. 1, Ban Fai Mun, Pa Kha Subdistrict, Thawang Pha District, Nan Province. Identification is currently being verified.

Initial reports indicate that four districts have been affected: Pua, Thawang Pha, Santisuk, and Mae Chrim. Pua district is considered the most severely impacted, with flooding affecting 7 sub-districts and 60 villages, impacting over 8,000 households.

Currently, military personnel, rescue workers, and relief teams from Nan province and supporting forces from other provinces are continuously mobilizing to the area to assist stranded citizens, evacuate people to shelters, and provide food, drinking water, and essential supplies to flood victims. At the same time, officials are urgently assisting people in Tha Wang Pha district, where floodwaters are rapidly rising. Personnel, jet skis, rescue equipment, and field kitchens are being deployed to help people in Santi Suk, Mae Chrim, and Tha Wang Pha districts.

Regarding the economic areas within Nan city, the Nan Municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Surapol Thiansut, has urgently deployed big bags at the border between Fai Kaeo Subdistrict and the Nan City municipality to prevent water from the Nan River from flooding the inner economic areas, including the area surrounding Nan Hospital.

The Nan Irrigation Project forecasts that the water level in the Nan River will reach its peak around 1:00 AM on August 20, 2026, at approximately 8.10 meters, which is about 10 centimeters above the bank in Phu Phiang District and about 40 centimeters below the bank in Nan Municipality.

The situation in Nan Province still needs to be closely monitored, as continuous rainfall persists in many areas. The Meteorological Department continues to issue warnings regarding heavy to very heavy rainfall and the influence of the monsoon trough from August 19-21, 2026.

Officials are urging residents in at-risk areas to closely monitor official announcements, prepare for evacuation to safe areas, and avoid traveling through flooded areas, areas with strong currents, and areas at risk of landslides.
