Department of Agricultural Extension Proposes Fruit Management Measures for Eastern Region

Bangkok: The Department of Agricultural Extension is preparing to submit proposals to the Fruit Board for the approval of measures aimed at managing fruit in the eastern region ahead of the harvest season from April to June. This initiative is part of the 2024-2027 action plan that seeks to integrate various sectors in forecasting market demand and quantity, developing distribution strategies, and strictly controlling quality.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Rapithat Unjitaphan, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Extension, has stated that the fruit trees in the eastern region, particularly durian, mangosteen, rambutan, and longan, are in the nutrient accumulation and flower development phase in preparation for the fruiting season from April to June. The department is set to propose management measures to the Fruit Board for consideration, aiming for systematic preparation in terms of quantity, quality, and market access for the 2026 production season.

Mr. Unjitaphan emphasized that this year's fruit management efforts are aligned with the Fruit Management Action Plan 2024-2027. The focus is on boosting production efficiency, upgrading product quality, leveraging technology and innovation, and managing the supply chain effectively. Key measures include risk analysis that covers production volume, quality, product standards, climate change, and trade competition.

The department plans to prepare supply forecasts to balance with demand and promote markets both domestically and internationally. This includes developing a cool chain network to maintain product quality and strict quality control measures such as careful selection of durian harvesters, pre-harvest inspections, and farm certification. Additionally, a contingency plan will be developed to address situations of oversupply at the provincial level, involving potential intervention by the Fruit Board to stimulate consumption and distribute the produce.

Collaboration with the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) has also led to the establishment of a War Room system, which will report the daily fruit situation to executives and the committee. This setup ensures that timely measures can be implemented, fostering cooperation among farmers, entrepreneurs, the government, and educational institutions to maintain price stability for fruits in the eastern region and enhance competitiveness in the global market.
