Bangkok: Celebrating its 3rd anniversary, the Department of Climate Change Mitigation has launched the Climate Information Center (CCIC) as part of four new strategic policies aimed at combating global warming and steering Thailand towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Raveewan Phuridej, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, presided over the opening ceremony and emphasized the urgent need for a global approach to tackle climate change. The newly established CCIC will utilize Big Data to enhance the country's business competitiveness and lay the groundwork for effective climate disaster management, aiming to minimize the loss of life and property.
Dr. Phuridej highlighted that transitioning to a green economy is crucial for Thailand's balanced growth across economic, social, and environmental aspects. The goal is to not only achieve net-zero emissions but also to bolster national competitiveness and create new opportunities for Thai citizens. The Department of Climate Change and Environment, launched on August 18, 2023, is now the primary agency driving this initiative, focusing on a low-carbon economy and climate resilience.
The department is actively preparing a sectoral action plan for climate change adaptation, translating policy frameworks into actionable plans at regional and sectoral levels. This involves drafting necessary legislation and collaborating across various sectors and networks to ensure a comprehensive and equitable transition to a low-carbon economy. The Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) plan is also being implemented to promote knowledge and participation in building a sustainable future for Thailand.
