Bangkok: Thailand has reiterated its neutral stance in the ongoing global competition between the United States and China over artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Mr. Chaiyanok Chidchob, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, emphasized the country's commitment to neutrality, choosing not to align exclusively with either of the technological superpowers.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaiyanok addressed concerns regarding the opposition's no-confidence motion and potential political ramifications. He expressed confidence in the government's preparations, highlighting that continuous efforts are being made by all ministries to address any issues raised by the opposition. Mr. Chaiyanok, who serves as the secretary-general of the Bhumjaithai Party, acknowledged that his position naturally involves political engagement, and he views this as an opportunity to showcase achievements.
The minister's remarks come amid reports that the US intends to pressure several countries, including Thailand, to take sides in the AI rivalry with China. Mr. Chaiyanok firmly stated that Thailand would not succumb to such pressure, reaffirming the nation's commitment to providing access to all forms of technology. He stressed the importance of allowing the public to learn about and utilize diverse technological innovations, irrespective of their origin.
Mr. Chaiyanok further elaborated on the potential consequences of choosing sides, noting that such a decision could adversely impact Thailand. He cited an example where adopting Chinese technology might lead to the US withdrawing its support. The minister emphasized that maintaining neutrality is crucial to the country's best interests.
In discussions about Thailand's international stance, Mr. Chaiyanok assured that the Prime Minister and Mr. Sihasak, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, have outlined a clear policy for communication on the global stage. He mentioned the consistency in discussions with the Prime Minister on related issues, including during the recent visit to China.
Thailand's decision not to sign any agreements aligning with either the US or China reflects a respect for both nations, and the country's position remains steadfast in its neutrality.
