Sihasak’s Visit to Myanmar Aims to Boost Trade and Strengthen Ties

Naypyidaw: Minister of Defence, Sihasak, revealed that his visit to Myanmar went well, strengthening relations between the two sides. Preparations are underway to open the Myawadi-Mae Sot border crossing to promote border trade.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, gave an interview after concluding his official visit to Naypyidaw, Myanmar, from April 21-22, 2026. He stated that the visit was to congratulate Myanmar on the recent elections and the formation of a new government. He met with key Myanmar leaders, including President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the Vice President, and the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. Discussions covered various issues, such as the disruption to border trade at Myawaddy in Mae Sot district due to the closure of the border crossing. He anticipates its reopening soon to promote border trade.

Regarding air pollution, the situation this year is quite severe. The Myanmar government is ready to cooperate with the three parties: Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. Thailand is prepared to provide support in terms of technological equipment and satellite imagery maps that identify the most at-risk areas.

Regarding trade and investment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited Thai private sector representatives to discuss matters with the Vice President of Myanmar. The Thai side believes that with a new government in Myanmar, economic development will move forward, coupled with infrastructure development. This includes projects such as the power transmission lines in Yangon, which the Neighboring Countries Economic Cooperation Agency (NEDA) is developing, and which Thailand is ready to support. Regarding energy, Thailand currently relies on natural gas from Myanmar for electricity generation, and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTT EP) is interested in exploring new sources together.

Mr. Sihasak confirmed that this visit to Myanmar is to revive interaction between Myanmar and ASEAN, in order to strengthen ASEAN during this turbulent global period.

Regarding allegations that Thailand is supporting Myanmar’s new government, Mr. Sihasak affirmed that this is in the best interest of the country, as border security issues cannot wait, and that the purpose of these talks is to support Myanmar in moving forward with the peace process.
