Natthapong Leads Push for People’s Social Security Act into Parliament

Bangkok: Leaders of the People's Party have organized a campaign rally to advance the draft of the People's Social Security Act into Parliament. Natthapong Ruangpanyawut, the People's Party leader, expressed confidence that if the bill passes the House of Representatives, it should face no significant obstacles in the Senate. Mr. Sahasawat Khumkhong, another prominent member, affirmed that the bill will undergo thorough scrutiny through the committee mechanism.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, accompanied by deputy party leaders and MPs advocating for labor and social security issues, led a march from Bang Pho intersection to the Parliament building. The campaign aimed to promote the People's Party's draft of the Social Security Act, scheduled for submission to the House of Representatives this evening.

Before the march commenced, Mr. Nattapong emphasized in an interview that public support is crucial for the bill's passage. He highlighted that the Social Security Fund, which belongs to over 20 million insured individuals, surpasses the national budget in size and, therefore, deserves equitable protection. Transparency and accountability in fund usage are paramount, and the management must be professional.

When queried about the sufficiency of the People's Party MPs' votes to secure the bill's passage, Mr. Nattapong explained that ongoing discussions with the government whip underscore the necessity of today's campaign and demonstrations. He stressed that the backing of insured individuals and the public is vital. He added that if the bill clears the House of Representatives, it should not encounter significant challenges in the Senate, given that government parties previously supported the Social Security Fund's detachment from the civil service system. Based on historical stances, he believes no political party would oppose a law benefiting all insured individuals.

Mr. Sahasawat Khumkhong highlighted the need for reform, citing an audit of the Social Security Fund that unveiled significant transparency issues. The government's dominant decision-making power, despite the fund's benefits to insured individuals, lacks expertise in fund management, leading to low returns and potential unsustainability. Predictions suggest that without reform, the fund could collapse within 25-30 years. The People's Party advocates for restructuring the fund to enhance transparency, professionalism, and its connection to insured individuals for long-term protection. A committee is expected to investigate the fund's operations, and the People's Party will continue monitoring the issue.

The campaign procession, marked by chants of "Reclaim Social Security," was met with encouragement from citizens along the route. Upon reaching the Parliament building's plaza around 4:00 PM, the draft amendment to the Social Security Act was submitted to Ms. Rachadaporn Eiamanan, Acting Head of the Political Coordination and Complaints Group, who accepted the document on behalf of the government.
