Bangkok: The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) has disclosed that over 100 data centers have collectively requested more than 26,000 megawatts of power, far surpassing the existing transmission and substation capacity of 3,000 megawatts. PEA is actively screening requests and accelerating network reinforcement to accommodate this burgeoning demand while ensuring power security.
According to Thai News Agency, PEA's Governor, Mr. Mongkol Treekitjanon, highlighted the significant electricity demand from data centers, with some requiring substantial power for large-scale projects. PEA has only been able to sign power supply contracts with a limited number due to the existing capacity constraints. The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is notably impacted, with a high concentration of data centers seeking electricity connections.
Mr. Mongkol emphasized that exceeding the network's current capacity would necessitate enhancements to the transmission system and substations, a process that involves coordination with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and other relevant agencies. PEA is also considering implementing a grid usage guarantee to screen data center operators with high electricity usage, ensuring alignment with the network's capacity.
In addition to electricity considerations, data centers' water requirements for cooling systems are also under review. PEA has communicated these needs to relevant agencies to ensure future investments comply with both electricity and water availability frameworks.
Mr. Mongkol further noted that PEA is exploring opportunities outside the EEC, within its 74-province service area, by assessing network potential and electricity supply capabilities. This initiative is part of PEA's broader strategy to adapt to the evolving energy landscape, with preparations for a TPA Platform and an Energy Trading Platform to support clean energy trading and Direct PPA.
The Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) is set to host a public consultation on the draft Power Development Plan of Thailand 2026-2050 (PDP 2026) in September 2026. The draft plan aims to establish a stable and adaptable electricity system, integrating data centers, the digital economy, and electric vehicles into energy forecasting, while bolstering the role of clean energy and storage systems for a sustainable energy transition.
