Nakhon Phanom Transportation Projects to Enhance Northeastern Economy


Nakhon Phanom: Aiming to improve the transportation sector and strengthen the economy of the Northeastern region, Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, along with Mrs. Manop Jareonsri, Deputy Minister of Transport, and Mr. Chaiyatham Promsorn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, visited Nakhon Phanom Province. They held a joint meeting with government and private sectors to tackle various projects and prepare to coordinate cooperation with Lao PDR to create opportunities for the people.



According to Thai News Agency, the Cabinet has scheduled an official meeting in Nakhon Phanom Province and visited the Upper Northeastern Group 2 provinces to monitor infrastructure and transportation facilities development. Mr. Suriya discussed the construction project of Highway No. 223, connecting Sakon Nakhon Province to Nakhon Phanom Province, intended to link with the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridges. The Department of Highways has been assigned to expedite the procurement process to begin construction promptly, aiming for completion in 2027.



For the Mekong River Road project, the Department of Rural Roads has been tasked with ensuring the road’s completion by 2027. This scenic route aims to enhance tourism along the Mekong River. In cases of implementation issues, coordination with relevant agencies and the public is crucial to prevent project delays.



The Ban Phai – Nakhon Phanom railway project is set to boost rail transportation in the Northeast, with the State Railway of Thailand overseeing land ownership and construction, also targeting a 2027 service launch.



Mr. Suriya emphasized that these developments will form a crucial economic route connecting to Lao PDR, Vietnam, and southern China. This initiative not only supports tourism in secondary cities but also positions the region as a trade gateway in the Greater Mekong Subregion.



Additionally, a joint meeting with public and private sectors was conducted to gather suggestions for driving the economy and developing the transportation network in Nakhon Phanom Province, linking trade routes with Lao PDR.



The improvement project of route number 12 (R12), from Thakhek city to the Napao border crossing in Lao PDR, has been approved for financial assistance, with an emphasis on utilizing Thai contractors for efficient execution.



The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seeking cooperation with Lao PDR to create opportunities, particularly in the air transport sector, to support low-cost airlines. Savannakhet Airport will be utilized for mutual benefit.



Mr. Suriya stated that the Ministry of Transport’s initiatives align with the government’s policies to enhance travel and international connectivity. The completion of these projects is expected to bring long-term benefits, including economic growth, reduced transportation costs, and increased tourism, ultimately improving the quality of life and increasing employment opportunities in the region.
