Buriram: The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has published a detailed report addressing concerns about the organization and renewal of the MotoGP contract at Thailand's circuits. Titled "9 facts about MotoGP at Thailand's circuits: Not worth it, private sector not supporting, no spectators, is this true?" the report aims to provide comprehensive information on the economic value and returns associated with hosting the MotoGP.
According to Thai News Agency, the SAT clarified several key aspects of the MotoGP arrangement. Dorna Sports, the owner of the MotoGP copyright worldwide, directly contracts with the SAT, ensuring stability and government oversight. All licensing fees are paid annually to Dorna Sports, with any revenue from competitions going directly to the SAT to reduce the government's financial burden.
The report also touches on the increasing costs of licensing fees, noting that while fees have risen globally, Thailand has successfully negotiated a competitive rate. The new contract will expand the event to include two race days, potentially boosting spectator interest and economic value. Furthermore, the SAT has emphasized that the MotoGP budget is separate from funds allocated for disaster relief, ensuring that sports promotion does not interfere with emergency funding.
The SAT addressed concerns about the timing of the contract renewal, stating that the process was not rushed but necessary to retain hosting rights. Additionally, despite claims of dwindling audience numbers, attendance has generally increased, with significant economic contributions noted over past years.
Regarding private sector support, the SAT highlighted that Thailand relies heavily on private funding, reducing government expenditure. The new contract aims to secure substantial private sector contributions, reinforcing the country's commitment to hosting the MotoGP.
In terms of racetrack logistics, the SAT clarified that there is no contract with Buriram United International Circuit Co., Ltd. Instead, Chang International Circuit provides the venue free of charge, contributing significant value over the years.
Overall, the SAT report underscores the consistent government backing and strategic value of hosting the MotoGP, with each successive government recognizing the economic and cultural benefits. The latest contract plans anticipate continued private sector engagement and substantial economic returns, positioning Thailand as a key player in the global MotoGP circuit.
