Bangkok: Experts warn of escalating tensions as the United States stands ready to intervene in the ongoing Thai-Cambodian war if the conflict does not come to a halt in the coming days. This move could potentially result in a "proxy war," according to security and international relations expert, Associate Professor Dr. Panithan Wattanayagorn.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Panithan shared his insights on Facebook regarding the situation, emphasizing that President Donald Trump has clearly stated his intention to intervene in the conflict again. However, he is expected to provide a limited timeframe for both nations to cease hostilities, possibly only "a few days or a few weeks."
If the fighting persists, the United States may resort to previous pressure tactics, such as imposing stricter tariffs, reducing military supplies, or limiting security assistance to Thailand. Additionally, there might be an effort to replace Cambodian leader Hun Sen with someone more aligned with US interests.
Dr. Panithan cautioned that the situation is nearing a critical juncture, where major powers might need to escalate their involvement. Should the conflict continue unchecked, it risks evolving into a "proxy war," potentially becoming the largest conflict in 75 years of Thai-Cambodian relations.
Thai political leaders are urged to communicate their commitment to peace both domestically and internationally, calling on Cambodia to cease fire immediately. This is seen as a crucial step to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
The possibility remains that if the United States and China successfully pressure both sides to stop the fighting, Thailand and Cambodia may need to acknowledge the roles played by these superpowers. This acknowledgment could provide both nations with a "dignified way out" of the crisis.
