Bangkok: The government spokesperson confirmed there is no budget allocated to assist Cambodia in new projects. He clarified that the 18.2 million baht, not the 31 million baht, is interest payments from a previous project that has already been completed.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekkapop Pienpises, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, addressed the misinformation concerning the 2027 budget. He stated that the approval of a 31 million baht aid to Cambodia was inaccurate in terms of both the amount and the purpose. The spokesperson detailed that the actual budget figure associated with Cambodian projects amounts to 18.2 million baht, divided into 12 million baht for the R67 road project and 6.2 million baht for the Stung Bot border crossing project. These funds are designated for interest payments on completed projects, not for new initiatives.
Mr. Ekkapop emphasized that the budget allocation underwent thorough scrutiny by subcommittees and committees within the House of Representatives and the Senate during the parliamentary budget review process. The involved agencies provided necessary clarifications, resulting in no cuts to the budget. He further explained that while the construction of the R67 road project and the Stung Bot border crossing project has been completed, the Cambodian side is currently fulfilling its contractual obligations. Thai contractors and supervisors have been instrumental in these projects.
The Neighboring Countries Economic Cooperation and Development Office (NEDA) facilitates loans for infrastructure projects in neighboring countries, ensuring alignment with Thailand's development plans. Financial conditions require the use of Thai contractors and materials, with joint ventures mandating a Thai majority shareholding. NEDA secured loans from Thai financial institutions, responsible for covering part of the interest burden, which is the source of the current budget. Failure by NEDA to meet interest payments could impact contract terms and loan repayment by Cambodia.
The spokesperson reiterated that the government is attentive to public opinions and concerns, urging the public to consider accurate facts to avoid misunderstandings.
