Thailand Court Set to Rule on PM Prayuth’s Tenure on Sept. 30

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has set the date when it will rule on the status of suspended Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha.

The nation’s highest court announced Wednesday that it will deliver its ruling on September 30 on whether or not Prayuth can remain in office.

The former military chief seized power in a 2014 coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of then-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. The opposition party has filed a legal challenge that Prayuth has exceeded the constitutionally-limited eight years in office.

But his supporters have argued that his tenure actually began in 2017 when Thailand’s new constitution took effect, or even as late as 2019 when parliament chose him to head a coalition government after parliamentary elections.
