Thai Government Launches Nationwide ‘Thai Helps Thai’ Initiative to Reduce Cost of Living

Bangkok: In a significant move to alleviate the cost of living and boost local economies, the Thai government has launched the "Thai Helps Thai" initiative, which is set to distribute affordable products across all 878 districts of the country. This campaign, a collaboration between Sukjee and the Department of Provincial Administration, aims to provide essential goods at lower prices while supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and community products.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Ms. Supajee Suthamphan, along with Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, Mr. Narucha Khosasilvilai, announced the initiative's commencement, which coincides with the distribution of discounted consumer goods nationwide. The first phase of the campaign started on May 1st, with 300 distribution points already established. These points will facilitate the sale of community and SME products, both physically and online, beginning May 11th. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to reduce living costs and generate income for local communities.

Mr. Narucha highlighted the project's grassroots approach, noting the cooperation from all districts nationwide, which will serve as venues for selling affordable goods, including products from leading department stores and local communities. He emphasized the significance of this collaboration between the two ministries in supporting the Thai people.

Ms. Supajee further elaborated on the government's commitment to promoting SME and community products throughout the year, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Industry. The next phase of the initiative will involve deploying mobile vendor trucks, known as "phumpuang," to directly deliver goods to community members.

The Director-General noted that a survey showed over 30,000 people interested in participating as mobile vendors, with registrations open from May 1st to 7th. These mobile vendors will play a crucial role in distributing goods at the community level, with the government providing fuel cards to assist with transportation costs. Distribution points will be set up in districts, markets held every Friday, and at post offices nationwide, which will act as collection and distribution hubs under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.

Ms. Supajee stressed the dual focus of the initiative on reducing living costs and sourcing quality products, while also supporting small-scale vendors and communities. The marketing strategy involves collaboration between strong businesses, modern trade outlets, small shops, and traditional grocery stores to ensure an equitable distribution system that benefits both large and small enterprises.
