Bangkok: The State Railway of Thailand has announced that more than 280,000 people traveled via train services during the Songkran festival period from April 10-12, 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported that a total of 282,719 passengers utilized train services across the nation. This included 128,336 inbound passengers and 154,383 outbound passengers, highlighting a robust demand for travel and tourism. The Southern route saw the highest passenger volume with 101,919 travelers, followed by the Northeastern route with 74,198, the Northern route with 52,983, the Eastern route with 31,637, the Mahachai route with 18,399, and the Maeklong route with 3,583.
On April 12, 2026, the number of passengers using trains nationwide reached 96,309, comprising 95,541 on regular trains and 768 on specially added trains. The travel direction data showed 43,300 incoming passengers and 53,009 outgoing passengers, indicating significant movement back to hometowns and for tourism during the holiday season. The Southern Line had the highest passenger count on this day with 34,912, followed by the Northeastern Line with 23,830, the Northern Line with 17,021, the Eastern Line with 11,203, the Mahachai Line with 7,818, and the Maeklong Line with 1,525.
To accommodate the returning travelers at the end of the holiday period, SRT has added two express trains: Express Train No. 6 from Chiang Mai to Bangkok Aphiwat and Express Train No. 974 from Yala to Bangkok Aphiwat. Additional trains will also be added on the Northern, Northeastern, and Southern lines on April 14, 15, and 17, 2026. Safety measures are strictly enforced at railway crossings nationwide, with local agencies monitoring high-risk areas around the clock to ensure traveler safety during the festival.
