Udon Thani Sandbox Initiative Aims to Propel Thai Medical Innovations to Global Market

Bangkok: In an ambitious move to integrate Thai medical innovations into the global healthcare market, the government is advancing its "Udon Thani Sandbox" initiative. This project involves the deployment of four groundbreaking Thai medical innovations, with the goal of incorporating them into the 30-baht healthcare scheme, thereby stimulating economic growth and international recognition.

According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongslueykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, highlighted the government's commitment to transitioning Thai research and innovation from laboratory settings to practical applications, particularly in the medical and healthcare sectors. This initiative is designed to provide public benefits through domestically developed technologies and create economic value by offering Thai entrepreneurs opportunities to further develop these innovations.

On August 15, 2026, a delegation including Professor Dr. Yoschanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), and Mr. Watcharapol Khaokham, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, visited Udon Thani Hospital. Their mission was to assess the implementation of medical and healthcare products from the Thai Innovation Registry under the National Health Security System, also known as the 30-Baht Universal Healthcare Scheme.

The pilot project features four medical innovations: an artificial colostomy bag made from Thai rubber for colon cancer patients, a personalized titanium skull plate utilizing 3D printing technology, an AI-powered chest X-ray system for early disease detection, and Pertagen, a pertussis vaccine for pregnant women. These innovations directly address the needs of medical professionals and patients, with designs developed through collaboration between doctors, researchers, and experts.

Captain Patthadarasmi emphasized that these innovations arose from the "real needs of doctors and patients," as existing market tools often fail to meet specific treatment requirements. The involvement of healthcare professionals in the design process ensures that these innovations are not only practical and effective but also readily implementable within the healthcare system. The MHESI is set to promote Udon Thani as an "Innovation Sandbox," a testing ground for Thai-developed medical devices, fostering collaboration between government entities, hospitals, researchers, and the private sector.

Furthermore, Captain Patthadarasmi noted that this initiative aims to improve public healthcare services and equipment while creating economic opportunities by linking agriculture, research, medical device manufacturing, and commercialization. For instance, transforming Thai rubber into medical products enhances the value of raw materials and fosters growth for researchers, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs, ultimately benefiting the economy and the public.
