Phumtham Denies Ordering Changes to Royal Thai Navy’s Training Away from Koh Kood.

Bangkok: Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has firmly denied allegations that he ordered the Royal Thai Navy to adjust its training schedule away from Koh Kood, a location in Trat Province. Phumtham addressed the issue following comments from Mr. Sonthi Limthongkul, founder of Manager newspaper, who questioned the decision and suggested that it was influenced by higher authorities. According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham clarified that the training in question was a routine, small-scale exercise, not a significant operation. He emphasized that the training was part of the navy's regular cycle and was planned in advance. Phumtham expressed concern over Sonthi's remarks, which he described as exaggerated, and reassured the public that the navy's operations were proceeding according to standard procedures. He urged citizens not to be swayed by unfounded reports, highlighting the sensitivity of military operations and the potential for misinformation to incite unnecessary c onflict. Phumtham also addressed claims that he personally ordered the navy to relocate its training activities, insisting there was no truth to these allegations. He pointed out that the navy's commander can independently confirm that all decisions were made within the framework of established plans. Phumtham reiterated that the relocation of training to the south was consistent with the annual strategies of the armed forces and not directed by any external orders. In response to questions about the navy's potential shift from training exercises to patrolling oil rigs in the Gulf of Thailand, Phumtham assured that these activities were also in line with the navy's operational protocols. He stressed the importance of understanding the navy's strategic movements as part of their regular duties, such as coastal patrols and territorial checks, rather than as actions prompted by external pressures. Phumtham addressed concerns about whether the change in training location was intended to avoid diplomatic misund erstandings, affirming that the navy's operations were conducted within the scope of normal activities. He emphasized the need for accurate information dissemination and cautioned against the spread of rumors or speculative news that could harm national interests. Regarding a recent meeting with the Navy Commander at Government House, Phumtham stated that it was a routine briefing session aimed at fostering closer relations among the armed forces and understanding operational challenges. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to modernize the military in response to evolving global challenges, highlighting the necessity of addressing systemic issues such as flood management. Finally, Phumtham responded to Mr. Sonthi's public declaration to mobilize protests, advising that any demonstrations should be conducted lawfully. He underscored the importance of exercising rights within the legal framework to maintain peace and order.
