Bangkok: Pakornwut Udompipatkul has inquired about the timeline for the Speaker of the House, Sophon Saram, to sign the nomination of Nattapong Ruangpanyawut as the Leader of the Opposition. Pakornwut questioned whether there were any objections to this process. Sophon assured that the proceedings were aligned with existing regulations and emphasized that there was no delay, suggesting that additional actions would be unnecessary. According to Thai News Agency, during a House of Representatives meeting chaired by Speaker Sophon Saram, a motion was under consideration to establish a special committee to address issues related to low agricultural product prices and to provide relief to farmers affected by the Middle East conflict. At this meeting, Pakornwut Udompipatkul, a party-list MP from the People's Party, interrupted the deliberations to seek clarification on whether Speaker Sophon would nominate Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, a fellow party-list MP and leader of the People's Party, for the position of Leader of the Opposition. Pakornwut highlighted the constitutional requirement for this appointment following the Cabinet's assumption of office, as outlined in Article 106 of the Constitution. Pakornwut further pointed out that the Speaker had previously stated he had not received the necessary documentation for the party leader's nomination, despite his own investigation indicating that such documentation was not required. Pakornwut referenced a statement made by Speaker Sophon on April 27th, assuring that documentation was unnecessary and that he would proceed with signing the nomination. However, on April 29th, Sophon informed the media that the nominee's qualifications were still being verified. Pakornwut questioned the need for further qualifications, citing that the constitutional requirements were clear: the nominee must be the leader of the party with the most parliamentary members, none of whom hold ministerial positions, or serve as Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House. He expressed his understanding that the secretariat likely submitted the necessary documents to the Speaker and sought confirmation on when the signature would be issued. In response, Speaker Sophon reiterated that he would sign if everything proceeded according to protocol and without obstacles. He assured that there were no hindrances and expressed his intent not to delay the process, considering such delays a waste of time, before ending the discussion to move on to the next agenda item.
