Department of Corrections Addresses Concerns Over Release of Former Drug Trafficking Convict

Bangkok: The Department of Corrections has issued a statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the release of Lao Ta Saenli, a former key drug trafficking convict, from Bang Kwang Central Prison. Officials emphasized that all legal procedures were strictly adhered to, and they are currently reviewing the criteria for enforcing sentences in cases involving serious crimes.

According to Thai News Agency, the release of Mr. Lao Ta Saenli has generated concerns among the public, as reported in news outlets and on social media. Mr. Saenli, aged 85, was convicted for his involvement in serious drug-related offenses and had been detained since October 11, 2016. The Criminal Court sentenced him to life imprisonment on December 12, 2019, and imposed a fine of 2,500,000 baht. However, due to his status as a first-time offender and his good behavior in prison, he was eligible for promotions within the prisoner classification system and received multiple royal pardons.

Mr. Saenli's life sentence was subsequently reduced to a 50-year term, with further reductions granted in alignment with royal pardon decrees. As an elderly prisoner over 70 years old, he received additional sentence reductions, culminating in a final reduction to 8 years, 3 months, and 28 days. His detention spanned from October 11, 2016, to his release on August 14, 2026, totaling 9 years, 10 months, and 8 days in prison.

The Department of Corrections acknowledged public concern and expressed the need to reevaluate sentencing guidelines, particularly for severe offenses. The focus will be on ensuring that sentences are proportionate to the crimes committed, prioritizing public safety, and considering societal benefits. Officials stressed that Mr. Saenli's release adhered to legal provisions applicable to all inmates, with no exceptions or personal discretion involved.

The release process included thorough screening and behavioral rehabilitation, and relevant drug enforcement agencies have been notified to monitor Mr. Saenli's activities post-release. The Department of Corrections remains committed to transparency and fairness in its operations.
