Bangkok: Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced that the cabinet is set to make a decision next week regarding the appointment of the new governor of the Bank of Thailand. This decision will be addressed in the upcoming cabinet meeting, as confirmed by Thaksin during a special interview with Weera Thiraphat and Chutima Phuengkhamsuk on Channel 9 MCOT HD. Thaksin emphasized the importance of political support while ensuring progress.
According to Thai News Agency, the interview took place at the seminar titled 'Unlocking Thailand's Future, Fighting the Global Crisis' organized by MCOT Public Company Limited. Thaksin expressed his views on various governmental projects, including the land bridge project and the 20 baht flat-rate electric train. He criticized the extensive reliance on legislation for progress, advocating for the use of emergency decrees to expedite urgent matters.
Thaksin discussed strategies for tackling household debt, drawing parallels with the Asset Management Corporation of Thailand. He recounted negotiating with bank owners to purchase a 50 percent stake to stimulate GDP growth, which he believes would reduce the public debt-to-GDP ratio.
The former Prime Minister also addressed the pending decision on the new governor of the Bank of Thailand, clarifying that the matter is scheduled for the upcoming cabinet meeting. He mentioned that the decision involves checking the candidate's background and consulting with Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, the Prime Minister's Secretary-General, regarding any changes to the nominee's name.
Thaksin highlighted the importance of confidence in investment, suggesting that state enterprises should buy back shares to demonstrate their stability. He noted recent tax waivers as a step towards encouraging this practice.
