Geneva: Thai Prime Minister Srisaket Sihasak has clarified that Thailand is not aligning with the Myanmar military government, emphasizing that Thailand's interest lies in regional stability and peace, particularly given its shared border with Myanmar.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs, provided insights into the discussions held with Mr. Jean-No«l Barrow, France's Minister of European Affairs and Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting, which took place on February 23rd, marked a significant dialogue as Thailand and France celebrate their 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The talks revolved around enhancing bilateral cooperation, with a focus on leveraging France's expertise to aid Thailand's economic transition that necessitates advanced technology.
France's interest in the Myanmar issue stems from its desire to assume a more active role in the Indo-Pacific region. Recognizing Thailand's increasing diplomatic activities regarding Myanmar, France sought Thailand's perspective on the matter. Mr. Sihasak reported on discussions with Myanmar's Foreign Minister, Mr. Than Swe, held in Phuket. France urged Myanmar to go beyond mere elections, advocating for dialogue and a comprehensive peace process. Thailand, sharing a border with Myanmar, acknowledges the necessity of engaging in dialogue with the Myanmar military government and addressing issues such as online scams, drug trafficking, and river pollution in the border region. The focus remains on achieving stability, peace, and revitalizing trade along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Mr. Sihasak reiterated that Thailand's actions are not indicative of an alliance with the Myanmar military government, nor do they signify a departure from the five-point consensus. Instead, Thailand remains committed to dialogue, while urging Myanmar to demonstrate positive steps, such as facilitating assistance and reducing violence. Should Myanmar respond favorably, Thailand hopes for ASEAN's support in this approach, with the aim of gradually reintegrating Myanmar into ASEAN.
Furthermore, Mr. Sihasak highlighted Thailand's role in aiding Myanmar's peace efforts. By engaging in dialogue with ethnic minorities along the Thai border, Thailand aims to facilitate negotiations with the new government post-elections and lends its support to this endeavor.
