Bangkok: The Thai Chamber of Commerce is advocating for expedited elections following the recent dissolution of parliament, urging the formation of a new government with full authority to address critical legislative and international trade matters.
According to Thai News Agency, the Chamber emphasized the political necessity behind the Prime Minister's decision to dissolve parliament, acknowledging the decision amidst volatile economic and geopolitical conditions affecting national stability. Mr. Poj Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Chambers of Commerce, remarked on the alignment of this decision with democratic principles and the Constitution.
The Chamber stresses the importance of conducting elections within the legally mandated timeframe to facilitate the establishment of a fully empowered government. This urgency is driven by the need for parliamentary approval on significant laws and trade negotiations, including ongoing tariff discussions with the United States and the Thailand-EU Free Trade Agreement, which are crucial for maintaining the country's global competitiveness.
During the interim period, the Chamber believes that the caretaker government retains the legal authority to continue implementing previously approved policies, such as economic stimulus measures and relief efforts for citizens and businesses in affected regions. The Chamber underscores the importance of these measures being carried out without interruption, within the boundaries of the caretaker government's regulated limitations.
The Thai Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB), holds confidence in the ability of the caretaker government, civil servants, and the private sector to sustain the economy until a new government is formed. The Chamber calls for cooperation among all parties to prevent stagnation and foster an environment of confidence, enabling Thailand to progress steadily and restore economic assurance on both domestic and international fronts.
