Bangkok: TFEX is set to introduce "USD/THB Options," a new currency management tool, offering an alternative for investors and businesses involved in import and export activities to effectively manage currency values, with trading scheduled to commence on December 15, 2025.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Rinjai Chakornpipat, Managing Director of the Thailand Futures Exchange Public Company Limited (TFEX), emphasized the urgency for such a tool due to the current volatility in the currency market. This volatility necessitates that importers, exporters, and investors have robust means to manage currency risks. While TFEX's "USD/THB Futures" have already been a popular choice for risk management and capitalizing on exchange rate fluctuations, the introduction of USD/THB Options aims to offer stakeholders a more straightforward and accessible currency management solution. These options are designed to complement the existing USD/THB Futures.
Ms. Rinjai elaborated that the Dollar Baht options encompass call options (rights to buy) or put options (rights to sell) US dollars under predetermined conditions. For those new to currency management, purchasing or holding Dollar Baht options is a user-friendly method to mitigate risks associated with the fluctuating Thai baht. This approach simplifies the process by removing the need for margin requirements, limiting potential losses, and requiring minimal capital investment. Additionally, these options provide profit opportunities by allowing investors to predict the direction of the Thai baht's movement.
The USD/THB Options contracts have been designed with investor convenience in mind, with each contract equating to 1,000 USD. This contract size is particularly suited to investors and traders with lower capital requirements. To participate, investors only need to open a derivatives account and are not required to present proof of foreign transaction history or bank deposits. Trading will be conducted daily, with sessions running from 9:15 AM to 12:30 PM in the morning and from 1:15 PM to 4:55 PM in the afternoon, beginning on December 15, 2025.
