Lopburi: The State Railway of Thailand has officially inaugurated the Lopburi 2 station, a significant addition to Lopburi Province's rail infrastructure, aimed at serving 14 northern trains. The opening ceremony was presided over by Ms. Mallika Jiraphanwanich, Deputy Minister of Transport, alongside Mr. Anan Phothinimdaeng, Deputy Governor of the State Railway of Thailand, and Mr. Pichet Kunathamrak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport.
According to Thai News Agency, the development of the Lopburi 2 station is part of a broader governmental initiative to enhance transportation infrastructure across Thailand. The government views the rail system as a critical component in reducing logistics costs and improving economic competitiveness. Lopburi Province, a key transportation hub connecting central and northern Thailand, stands to benefit significantly from this development. The Lopburi-Pak Nam Pho double-track railway project, spanning 19 kilometers and the longest elevated railway in Thailand, is a cornerstone of this initiative.
The Lopburi 2 station offers a free shuttle service to facilitate movement between the original Lopburi station and the newly opened facility. The project is designed to transform public travel by providing convenience, speed, and value. The government has plans for ongoing development, including constructing seven additional double-track railway lines, which will cover over 1,488 kilometers. This expansion aims to integrate rail, land, and water transport systems, boosting Thailand's logistics capabilities at a regional level.
Mr. Anan Phothinimdaeng highlighted the government's policy to transition from single-track to double-track railway networks. This shift supports a broader strategy to move transportation from road to rail, which is more cost-effective and efficient. The State Railway of Thailand has prioritized the construction of double-track railway projects, with five of seven urgent routes already operational.
The newly opened Lopburi 2 Station, located in Tha Wung, caters to a variety of train services, including special express, express, and rapid trains on the northern line. The three-story facility includes elevators, restrooms, and other essential amenities, although it does not offer baggage services. The station's inauguration is expected to enhance travel speed, punctuality, and capacity.
The State Railway of Thailand has also adjusted train schedules to align with the new station's operations, effective December 5, 2025. Passengers can utilize the Train Tracking System (TTS) for real-time updates on train locations and schedules, allowing for more precise travel planning.
