Sihasak Emphasizes China’s Key Role in Thailand’s Economic Transition

Bangkok: Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, has underscored the pivotal role of China in advancing Thailand's economic transition and regional stability. Following his meeting with Wang Yi, a prominent Chinese political figure, Sihasak highlighted the mutual benefits of enhancing trade and investment ties between the two nations.

According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak's discussions with Wang Yi revolved around deepening bilateral relations, with a focus on economic collaboration. Recognizing China as Thailand's most significant market and a growing source of investment, Sihasak noted that Chinese investments are well-aligned with Thailand's strategic goals, particularly in transitioning to a green and digital economy. China currently stands as the second-largest investor in Thailand, and there is potential for it to become the largest. This cooperation is expected to bolster sectors such as electric vehicles and clean energy in Thailand.

The talks also addressed regional security issues, particularly the situation in Myanmar. Sihasak and Wang Yi discussed efforts to bring Myanmar back into the peace process, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and democracy. Thailand, as a neighboring country, is keen to engage constructively with Myanmar, acknowledging the necessity of addressing border concerns, including online scams and pollution.

Moreover, Sihasak expressed the desire to strengthen the trilateral cooperation framework between Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos to combat PM2.5 pollution. He reiterated the significance of this initiative not just bilaterally, but as a reflection of Thailand's regional role. Sihasak conveyed to Wang Yi that the current Thai government, despite past political instability, is committed to proactive foreign policies that will yield tangible benefits for the nation.
