Narathiwat: Railway inspectors were killed in an explosion in Narathiwat. Authorities have arrested one suspect and are urgently inspecting the railway tracks that were bombed before repairing them to reopen train services as soon as possible.
According to Thai News Agency, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from the Southern Border Provinces, along with EOD officers from the Narathiwat Provincial Police, forensic officers, and K-9 units, inspected the railway tracks at the junction between Maruebo and Tanyongmas railway stations. This was one of 40 locations where insurgents planted bombs on the night of August 22nd. They found three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) made from 25 kg picnic gas cylinders, each with a timer. One bomb was placed on the railway tracks, damaging two sections of the concrete track and tearing apart the rails, rendering the area impassable. Two other bombs were placed on utility poles approximately 50 meters from the explosion site along the road parallel to the railway tracks. The poles remained intact. Authorities collected evidence from the scene. It is estimated that at least six insurgents were involved in this attack.
Recently, authorities reviewed CCTV footage and gathered evidence at the scene, leading to the apprehension of one male suspect involved in the crime in Cho Airong District. The suspect was caught on CCTV destroying a security camera installed on a roadside utility pole. He has been taken to an interrogation center in Narathiwat Province for further questioning, but he denies the charges, despite the clear CCTV footage showing his actions.
