Bangkok: Police recommend a "5-step checklist" for rescuing homes and vehicles after floodwaters recede to prevent electric shocks and engine damage. Pol. Maj. Gen. Siriwat Deepo, deputy spokesman for the Royal Thai Police, revealed that the Royal Thai Police are concerned about the flood situation in the southern region, which is beginning to ease in some areas. He noted that after the floodwaters recede, accidents involving electric shocks and damage to property, particularly vehicles, are common due to negligence. He also noted health risks and the potential for criminals to exacerbate distress.
According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Police recommend urgent actions to ensure the safety of life and property of citizens. The first step is to handle the electrical systems with care. Individuals are advised not to touch any electrical equipment when wet. It is crucial to wear rubber shoes and dry gloves before entering flooded homes and to ensure that electrical devices are completely dry or inspected by a technician before use to prevent shocks.
The second step addresses vehicle safety. Starting a car or motorcycle submerged in water can cause severe engine damage. The police suggest disconnecting battery terminals and checking for water ingress in the engine oil. If water is detected, immediate action should be taken by involving insurance companies or tow trucks.
The third step is to be cautious of poisonous animals. Floods often drive snakes, centipedes, and scorpions into homes. Residents are urged to check their homes thoroughly and seek medical attention immediately if bitten by any such animals.
The fourth precaution involves preventing epidemics. Walking through flooded areas without protection can lead to diseases like leptospirosis. Wearing boots and avoiding direct contact with contaminated water is recommended.
Finally, the fifth step warns against scammers. The police caution residents to be wary of individuals posing as service providers offering overpriced services or attempting theft.
For any electrical issues, residents are encouraged to contact the Provincial Electricity Authority at 1129. In emergencies, the public can reach out to the emergency services at 1669 or the Royal Thai Police hotline at 1599, which operates 24 hours a day.
