‘New Generation Senators’ Insist on a Single Majority Vote to Hold a Referendum.

Bangkok: 'New Generation Senators' confirm the position of a single majority vote to hold a referendum. "Nantana" urges setting a time frame in time for the 2027 election. According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Nantana Nanthawaropas, a member of the New Generation Senator Group, stated her position on the draft referendum bill. She emphasized that regardless of the resolution of the joint committee considering the draft referendum bill, the New Generation Senators, though in the minority, advocate for using the single-tier majority criterion in the referendum to amend the constitution. This approach, she argues, enhances public access and reflects the views, attitudes, and will of the people, contrary to a double-tier majority criterion. Ms. Nantana elaborated, "The referendum should be the people's intention, just like the election. If we stipulate that every election must have a two-tier majority, it may not align with the people's intention because those unable to vote may have valid reasons. A single-tier m ajority will drive the constitutional amendment towards its goal. Moreover, there should be a swift timeline to conduct the referendum, ensuring its completion by the 2027 election." Mr. Pornchai Witayalertphan, another member of the New Generation Group, added that the two-tier majority principle used in foreign countries distorts referendum outcomes. He explained that it encourages those opposed to a referendum's passage to dissuade voter participation, potentially misrepresenting public intent. He noted that many foreign nations are moving away from the two-tier majority principle in referendums, suggesting that Thailand should not adhere to it.
