Minister of Labour Assures Return of Crew Member’s Body to Thailand for Songkran

Bangkok: The Minister of Labour has confirmed that the body of crew member "Mayureenaree" will be returned to Thailand in time for the Songkran holiday. He stated that efforts are being made to ensure that her entitlements are fulfilled and that the compensation provided to her family is adequate for them to move forward.

According to Thai News Agency, Labour Minister Chulaphan Amornvivat addressed the deaths of the three crew members of the 'Mayuree Naree' crew in the Strait of Hormuz attack. He has directed the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare to coordinate with a private company for the repatriation of the bodies to Thailand. The private company has been thanked for its cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The bodies are expected to be returned during the Songkran holiday for religious ceremonies. The compensation will adhere to the Maritime Labour Act B.E. 2558 (2015) and is believed to be sufficient for the families' recovery. Further discussions are scheduled for today, and the matter is anticipated to be resolved amicably.

Currently, more than 66,000 migrant workers are in the Middle East, with about 900 previously expressing a desire to return to Thailand. Recently, an additional 60 have requested to return. As the situation evolves, a further survey is underway to determine if more workers will request to return, leaving the exact number uncertain.

In preparation for the returning workers, the Ministry of Labour has developed a long-term plan to support their employment. This includes providing skills training within the country and seeking new employment opportunities for those wishing to work abroad.
