Marine Department Enforces Strict Measures for Safe Water Travel Over Long Holiday Weekend

Bangkok: The Marine Department has reported that over 260,000 passengers utilized water transportation services nationwide during the long holiday weekend.

According to Thai News Agency, the Marine Department is intensifying safety measures from May 1-4 to better accommodate citizens and tourists traveling by water. Key efforts include thorough inspections of passenger vessels, regulation of piers, and a strong emphasis on the mandatory wearing of life jackets throughout the journey.

Mr. Kritphet Chaiyachue, Director-General of the Marine Department, highlighted that the safety measures align with directives from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, and Deputy Minister of Transport, Sanpetch Bunyamanee. The policies focus on prioritizing public safety while facilitating smooth travel experiences during the holiday period, which spans from Labor Day on May 1st to Coronation Day on May 4th, 2026.

Officials have been tasked with conducting comprehensive inspections of passenger vessels before departure, ensuring the hull, engine systems, and safety equipment are in optimal condition. Life jackets must be available in sufficient quantities, and passengers are reminded to wear them at all times.

Additionally, there are stringent checks for alcohol and drug use among boat operators and crew members before each trip. Should any irregularities be detected, operations will be halted immediately to mitigate the risk of accidents. The department is also enforcing controls on passenger numbers to prevent overcrowding, implementing strict boarding and disembarking regulations, and collaborating with marine police and relevant agencies to manage busy tourist areas and piers.

The significant number of over 260,000 water transport passengers underscores the popularity of water travel during extended holidays. The Marine Department continues to urge public and tourist cooperation in adhering to official instructions, particularly the wearing of life jackets and avoidance of risky behaviors, to maintain the highest safety standards for water travel during the holiday weekend. Any unusual incidents should be reported to the 24-hour hotline at 1199.
