Bangkok: The Thai national table tennis team is gearing up for the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, with the women's team holding the best prospects for securing a medal. The Sports Authority of Thailand is backing the team's preparation efforts for the Games, which will be held from September 19th to October 4th, 2026. Comprising a mix of seasoned players and young talent, the team is set to compete for seven gold medals across various categories.
According to Thai News Agency, the Table Tennis Association of Thailand is sending eight athletes-three men and five women-to the Games. Mr. Nattawut Ruangwes, president of the association, highlighted the significant progress of the Thai table tennis team over the past years. The team clinched three gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games and secured a bronze medal in the women's team event at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Additionally, the women's team achieved a fifth-place finish at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Mr. Nattawut further emphasized that the Thai players have been actively participating in professional leagues abroad since the 2024 Olympics, supported by domestic training with partners from China and Taiwan. The team for the 20th Asian Games will include core players from successful past events, such as Suthasinee Sawatbut, Orawan Paranang, and Jinnipa Sawatbut, alongside experienced players Pakpoom Sanguansin and Sarayut Tanjaroen. Rising stars in the age group of 16-19, including Pattaraporn Wonglakorn, Kulapass Vijitviriyakul, and Thitipat Preechayan, will also form part of the squad.
Mr. Nattawut expressed optimism about the team's chances, particularly in the women's team event, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. He noted that while the competition includes world champions from countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea, a favorable draw and reaching the quarterfinals could pave the way for another medal for Thailand.
