Bangkok: The Department of Livestock has instructed the film crew of the TV drama 'Mae Yua' to disclose information regarding the use of anesthesia on cats during the production of the show. The department has expressed concerns that the use of anesthesia in a particular scene may amount to animal cruelty and stressed that such procedures must be carried out by a licensed veterinarian. According to Thai News Agency, a letter was dispatched by the Department of Livestock Development to Channel One 31, urging them to collaborate with the drama's producers to clarify the circumstances under which anesthesia was administered to a cat during a scene involving poison consumption. The department emphasized that only a veterinarian is qualified to perform such procedures, and if it is discovered that the anesthesia was not administered by a veterinarian, it could be classified as animal cruelty. Additionally, the Veterinary Council will review if the procedure adhered to ethical standards if it was conducted by a li censed vet. Dr. Boonyakrit Pinprasong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, stated that the cats featured in the scene must be examined by department officials to assess their health post-anesthesia. Should any actions that jeopardize the animals' health be identified, legal consequences could include up to two years of imprisonment, a fine not exceeding 40,000 baht, or both. The department further underscored the importance of preparing an animal's health before administering anesthesia. This includes withholding food and water to prevent choking and ensuring continuous monitoring during and after the procedure, similar to protocols followed in human medical care. In response to this incident, the Department of Livestock Development is in the process of drafting additional regulations for the use of animals in performances to ensure their safety and well-being. While these regulations are not yet finalized, filmmakers are advised to exercise caution and seek veterinary guida nce when involving animals in their productions. The department also suggests the use of filming techniques or Visual Effects technology to create virtual representations, thereby avoiding potential harm to animals.
