Bangkok: The Meteorological Department issued warning number 7, indicating that heavy rain is expected to continue from September 11-13, putting Bangkok and the central region at risk of severe to very severe rainfall.
According to Thai News Agency, the warning was issued on September 10, 2026, as Thailand continues to experience significant rainfall. The heavy rain is particularly affecting the western part of the North, the lower Northeast, the Central region, Bangkok and its surrounding areas, and the East. This weather pattern is driven by a cold air mass from a high-pressure area spreading over the upper northern and upper northeastern regions of Thailand. Consequently, the monsoon trough has shifted southward, impacting the lower northern, upper central, and northeastern regions before entering a strong low-pressure system in the central South China Sea. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon persists over many areas of Thailand.
From September 11-13, 2026, continuous rainfall is anticipated in the lower northeastern region, central region, Bangkok and its surrounding areas, eastern region, and southern region, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas. Conversely, rainfall is expected to decrease in the northern and upper northeastern regions. This shift is attributed to the continued spread of cold air mass from China over the upper areas, causing the monsoon trough to shift further south and extend more across the lower regions. Additionally, the southwest monsoon is expected to strengthen.
The Meteorological Department has warned the public to be vigilant about the dangers posed by heavy to very heavy rainfall and accumulated rainfall, which could lead to flash floods and landslides, particularly in hillside areas near waterways and low-lying areas. People are advised to avoid routes prone to repeated flooding, as short-term flooding may occur.
Furthermore, between September 11-13, 2026, a strong low-pressure system in the central South China Sea is likely to intensify into a tropical cyclone. It is expected to approach the northern coast of Vietnam between September 14-15, 2026.
The Meteorological Department urges the public to continuously monitor the situation and weather forecasts, and to plan their travel and daily activities with caution to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
