Bangkok: Governor Chatchart Sittipunt visited Makkasan to oversee the relief efforts for those affected by a devastating fire, emphasizing the need to prioritize the welfare of children and the elderly. According to Thai News Agency, the fire broke out in a house in the Makkasan community, Sukhumvit Soi 3, Makkasan Subdistrict, Ratchathewi District, at around 2:35 AM. It was contained by firefighters and rescue personnel by 3:17 AM, after damaging approximately 15 houses and resulting in one fatality. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Governor Chatchart, who had initially planned a morning run, diverted to the site upon receiving news of the incident. He stressed the importance of addressing the needs of the affected residents, remarking, "This is 1,000 times more important than running. We must take care of the people first." During his visit, he assessed the damage, communicated with officials and the public, and emphasized the necessity of monitoring structural security and the ongoing efforts of the officials involved.
In response to the situation, the Ratchathewi District Office has set up a temporary shelter at Wat Disahongsaram (Wat Makkasan) for those displaced by the fire. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is providing essential supplies such as drinking water, food, fans, mattresses, and sanitation facilities, coordinating with agencies to ensure comprehensive care. Currently, around 50 individuals from 20-25 families are residing in the shelter.
Governor Chatchart has directed officials to focus on vulnerable groups, particularly children and the elderly. He urged immediate collaboration with educational institutions to support affected children with educational needs, uniforms, and essentials, as belongings were lost in the fire. Furthermore, local health centers are conducting surveys to ensure elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses receive necessary medications and healthcare.
With over 120 children enrolled in the local early childhood development center, Governor Chatchart has called for safety inspections of the building and the development of contingency plans for the continued care of these children during the fire recovery process.
In addition to these efforts, the Poh Teck Tung Foundation has been providing meals and setting up soup kitchens for the disaster victims. The BMA is actively collecting data on the damage and community needs to ensure targeted and effective assistance.
Governor Chatchart has also tasked officials with safeguarding evacuated properties, assisting with police report filings, and exploring alternative housing solutions for those unable to return to their homes. Meanwhile, the road entrance from Phetchaburi Road remains closed as a safety precaution, and the BMA will determine when it is safe to reopen. The public is advised to avoid the area during peak hours.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with the BMA committed to closely monitoring the situation and maintaining support for those affected.
