Extreme Cold Snap Hits Phetchabun Province, Temperatures Dip to -3 Degrees Celsius

Nam Nao District: Nam Nao District in Thailand's Phetchabun Province is experiencing an extreme cold wave, with temperatures plunging to -3 degrees Celsius. This significant drop in temperature has led to the formation of frost on the ground and the roofs of vehicles. In response to the cold spell, a second-hand clothing vendor in Korat has taken the initiative to distribute free sweaters to local villagers as temperatures in the area reached 10 degrees Celsius.

According to Thai News Agency, local resident 'Khun Pui' Surachai reported observing frost on grass and car roofs in Ban Huai Ya Khruea, Village 1, Nam Nao Subdistrict. Surachai shared images and videos capturing the frosty conditions, highlighting the severity of the cold. It was noted that the temperature plummeted to -3 degrees Celsius around 4 a.m., following a period of cold weather combined with strong winds over the past few days.

Ms. Pui, another local resident, explained that although previous nights had temperatures hovering around 1-2 degrees Celsius, the winds had prevented frost formation. However, with calmer winds on the night of January 13, the temperature further dropped, resulting in noticeable frost by early morning. Ban Huai Ya Khruea, situated on the Phetchabun mountain range at an elevation of 750-800 meters, is recognized as the coldest village in the province, with temperatures in 2023 reaching as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Phetchabun Governor Saranyu Meethongkham has instructed local agencies and the public to keep a close watch on weather updates and remain vigilant against potential cold-related hazards. There are also warnings about the risk of fires due to the dry and windy conditions.

Meanwhile, in Chiang Mai Province, Doi Inthanon experienced similar cold conditions, with the temperature on the grass reaching -1.8 degrees Celsius. Various locations on Doi Inthanon reported temperatures ranging from 7 degrees Celsius at the peak to -1.1 degrees Celsius on the grass, resulting in widespread frost.

In Korat, Ms. Charinya, a 32-year-old vendor, has been commended for her efforts to support the community by providing free sweaters. Operating a daily stall selling second-hand clothes, she ensures that those in need can access essential winter clothing. This act of kindness is especially appreciated by low-income families struggling to cope with the cold weather.
