Bangkok: The Department of Land Development has announced an invitation to the "World Soil Day 2025" event, aiming to enhance public knowledge about soil. Mr. Surachat Malasri, Deputy Director-General of the department, revealed that the event is themed "Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities - Healthy Soils for Balanced Cities, Fostering Life," and is organized in honor of His Majesty King Rama IX. The King's significant contributions to soil resource research and development have been internationally recognized, including the "Humanitarian Soil Scientist" Award from the International Union of Soil Sciences. The United Nations has also designated December 5th as World Soil Day in his honor.
According to Thai News Agency, the event will take place from December 5-9, 2025, at the Land Development Department in the Chatuchak District of Bangkok. It aims to spread knowledge and facilitate discussions on soil conservation, highlighting the crucial role of healthy soil in creating sustainable urban environments. The focus will be on promoting balanced growth that incorporates economic, social, and environmental factors, enhancing green spaces, ensuring safe food, and improving urban living standards.
A key feature of the event is the King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award World Soil Exhibition, which raises awareness about the impact of soil on urban life, including challenges like topsoil loss and declining biodiversity. The exhibition will address solutions such as effective land-use planning and soil management techniques. The new "Good Soil, Good City, Good Health" exhibition format encourages attendees to engage with the topic of soil conservation through interactive demonstrations, including urban agriculture projects and sustainable waste management practices.
Throughout the event, attendees can participate in free workshops, training sessions, and demonstrations on various techniques. A seminar on sustainable agriculture will be led by both Thai and international experts, with a special lecture from Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. The public will also have access to the "New Look Soil Museum," a digital learning center offering interactive presentations on Thailand's soil systems.
In addition to educational opportunities, the event will feature activities for all ages, including a soil scientist competition and DIY art projects using natural materials. Various zones will offer seasonal produce and agricultural products from across the regions. The event serves as a collaborative platform for soil networks to showcase their research and innovations in soil and water conservation.
