Bangkok: Chaiyaphon Satondee, a Bangkok MP from the Prachachon Party, has launched a scathing critique of Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra, accusing her of allowing the military to interfere in political affairs through information operations (IO) and using public funds to incite societal discord for the benefit of certain generals. His comments have sparked significant controversy and debate within the political sphere.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaiyapol has called for a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Shinawatra, asserting that she prioritizes her family's interests over the public's and has facilitated the empowerment of groups that oppose democratic principles. He claims that the Prime Minister has abandoned military reform, allowing factions within the armed forces to manipulate state mechanisms to intimidate citizens and destabilize the democratic system.
Mr. Chaiyapol highlighted the military's strategic use of IO to influence politics, claiming that these operations have grown more pervasive. He alleged that these tactics are orchestrated using state resources to provoke conflict, ultimately serving the interests of certain generals who seek political dominance. He further revealed that the IO operation was centralized before the 2023 election, with a specialized cyber team conducting these activities under the supervision of Gen. Thammanun Withi.
During the debate, Mr. Chaiyapol presented documents from the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), dating back to October 2024, which purportedly list individuals like Thaksin Shinawatra and Lt. Col. Thammanat Prompao as threats to internal security. He argued that these documents illustrate the Prime Minister's complicity in allowing military mechanisms to operate unchecked by civilian authorities, thus eroding democratic integrity.
The debate further intensified when Witthaya Kaewparadai, MP for the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, questioned the authenticity of the documents, suggesting that if false, the allegations would have severe national security implications. Mr. Pichet Chueamuangphan, First Vice President of the House, expressed concerns over the release of secret military documents and the potential legal repercussions.
Despite interruptions and protests from various MPs, Mr. Chaiyapol continued to present evidence of the alleged misuse of military IO, drawing attention to cases involving Thaksin Shinawatra's health claims and their political ramifications. He concluded by emphasizing the need for military reform and criticizing the Prime Minister for failing to uphold democratic values and implement promised reforms.
Mr. Chaiyapol's allegations have reignited discussions on the role of the military in Thai politics and the necessity for transparent governance. The ongoing debate underscores the complexities of balancing military influence with democratic principles in Thailand's political landscape.
