Chinese National Rescued from Nepal Tunnel After 10-Day Ordeal

Kathmandu: Nepal has rescued one more survivor from the tunnel, a Chinese national. Ten days after the disaster in Nepal, rescue teams have saved one more person, a Chinese national, from a tunnel. This follows the earlier rescue of two Nepalese citizens. According to Thai News Agency, the Nepalese army revealed today that rescuers have safely extracted a Chinese national from a hydroelectric power plant tunnel in Nepal after he was trapped inside for 10 days due to severe flash flooding. Just days earlier, rescue teams had already pulled two Nepalese survivors from the tunnel. Photographs released by the military show the moment officials rescued the survivor, Lu Haitao, from a tunnel 225 meters deep inside the Upper Trisuli-1 hydroelectric power plant project. Video footage also shows the survivor receiving first aid from medical personnel while aboard a helicopter. Officials and rescue teams believe that a landslide and flash flood disaster on the Nepal-Xizang (Tibet) border of China, which occurred on August 26, has trapped at least 900 people inside six tunnels of a hydroelectric power plant project. Rescue teams from China, India, Australia, and South Korea have been deployed to assist in the search and rescue operation at the request of the Nepalese government for technical expertise and specialized skills. On the same day, Nepalese police revealed that the death toll from the disaster in Nepal had risen to 1,342, with 4,898 people still missing. Meanwhile, 8,631 people have been rescued amidst ongoing search and rescue efforts in the affected areas. China reported a death toll of 31 and 531 missing.
