Bangkok: The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has declared that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be introduced in the Thai League 2 from the final five matches of the season through to the play-offs.
According to Thai News Agency, the decision was outlined in a statement issued by the Football Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage. It stated the necessity of implementing VAR in the concluding matches and play-offs of the 2026/27 Thai League 2 professional football season. This measure is part of a broader strategy to manage expenses, driven by an existing debt of 360 million baht, with over 200 million baht still outstanding.
The association emphasized the importance of prudent budget management for the 2026/27 season to align with its financial situation. It aims to ensure the continued operation of all professional men's and women's football leagues under its jurisdiction. The association expressed hope that member clubs in Thai League 2 and football fans will understand the rationale behind this decision.
Furthermore, the association confirmed that VAR technology will be utilized in every match of the Thai League 1 throughout the entire 2026/27 season. The advanced VAR Cross Hair 3D system will also be in use, continuing from the 2025/26 season.
In terms of financial support, the Football Association of Thailand assured that funding for member clubs across all professional football leagues will remain unchanged. Thai League 1 clubs will continue to receive 15 million baht each, Thai League 2 clubs 4 million baht each, and Thai League 3 clubs 1.25 million baht each, to facilitate optimal operations.
