Bangkok:Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has directed the immediate release of flood relief funds to affected areas, emphasizing that the distribution should not wait for the recovery process to complete.
According to Thai News Agency, During a meeting of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command (NDPMC), Anutin highlighted the need for urgent care and compensation for residents impacted by flooding, with increased rainfall expected across Thailand, including Bangkok. Heavy rainfall is anticipated particularly in the southern region, which may impede drainage efforts. To address this, Anutin urged for expedited drainage where possible and emphasized the importance of using consistent data for rainfall, water volumes, and drainage levels to create clear, accessible maps for local communities.
Anutin instructed that areas needing adjustments in their plans or additional resources like boats should contact the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. He also underscored the importance of ensuring that evacuation plans are in place, with particular attention to vulnerable groups.
The Ministry of Public Health has been tasked with distributing medical supplies and medicines to prevent and treat potential flood-related illnesses. Anutin called for immediate cleanup and restoration efforts in areas where water levels have receded, particularly focusing on garbage collection, which will be coordinated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
In provinces designated as disaster areas, Anutin urged the rapid deployment of emergency funds to maximize benefits for affected populations and improve conditions in shelters. He stressed the need for hygienic facilities, particularly restrooms, to prevent disease transmission and requested additional compensation for cleaning staff where possible.
Anutin's visit to Prachinburi province revealed ongoing challenges with stagnant and foul-smelling floodwater, necessitating continued evacuations and support for residents. The government aims to collaborate with local organizations to ensure efficient resource allocation and assistance.
He also emphasized that relief payments do not need to wait for full restoration completion. Once eligible individuals' qualifications and documents are verified, payments should be made promptly. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has already allocated funds to the Government Savings Bank, allowing for immediate transfers upon verification completion. Anutin highlighted the importance of ensuring the first batch of relief funds reaches the public within this week.
