Bangkok: Adisorn Piengket, a Pheu Thai Party list MP, has voiced concerns regarding a crisis of confidence in the Election Commission and the Senate, which he believes could destabilize the democratic system. This follows a 5-2 vote to indict 77 individuals involved in the Senate collusion case. He emphasized the need to restore public trust and expressed skepticism about the Election Commission's ability to function amid differing opinions.
According to Thai News Agency, during a House of Representatives meeting chaired by Speaker Sophon Saram, Adisorn critiqued the Election Commission's performance reports for the fiscal years 2024 and 2025. He noted that the reports were surprisingly timely, given the current socio-political climate, and criticized the EC for delays in decisions on public interest issues. He reflected on his tenure as a representative before the EC's existence, emphasizing the need for an organization to ensure fair elections. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the EC's handling of the 2024 election and the problematic Senator selection process, suggesting that the EC's decisions have not resolved the issues satisfactorily.
Adisorn highlighted the EC's 5-2 vote declaring 77 individuals guilty while a minority opinion suggested prosecuting all 229 individuals involved. He argued that public trust in the EC is eroding due to the perceived lack of transparency and fairness. He expressed concern over the public's understanding of the Senate's role, likening it to an appendix, and questioned its legitimacy, which in turn affects the democratic system's stability.
He further criticized the EC and Senate's collaboration, alleging cover-ups and favoritism, and called for the Supreme Court's intervention to restore faith through an adversarial system. Adisorn stressed the importance of a truly impartial Election Commission and questioned whether the majority vote should prevail or if minority beliefs should take precedence. He voiced his concerns over the nation's democratic future and urged the restoration of public trust in key institutions.
Adisorn concluded by offering support to the House Speaker, the opposition, the government, and the EC, urging them to regain public trust. He expressed a desire to see faith restored in the democratic system and stressed the need for firm principles and the avoidance of political maneuvering that damages the nation. He called for the majority's ruling on the guilt of 26 Senators to be upheld and emphasized restoring trust across all branches of government, declaring "Long live democracy."
