Phuket: The government is advancing with the construction of the Phuket Expressway Phase 1, connecting Kathu to Patong, with plans to present it to the Cabinet later this year. The project aims to reduce travel time between the two locations to 5 minutes and is expected to be operational by 2031.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, provided updates on the expressway project, emphasizing its importance in addressing traffic congestion and supporting Phuket's provincial growth. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has already submitted the project proposal to the Ministry of Transport, featuring design adjustments such as a reduced tunnel size. The proposal is currently under review by relevant agencies.
Ms. Ploytalay shared that the project is slated for Cabinet approval by December 2026. Following approval, the bidding process is set to commence, with contractor selection anticipated by April 2027. Land acquisition is expected to conclude by January 2027, and construction is projected to start in October 2027, lasting four years, with completion aimed for September 2031 and service commencement in October 2031.
The construction will address the limitations of the existing route, incorporating interchanges at Patong and Kathu to enhance connectivity. The expressway will offer additional travel options, reduce reliance on current roads, and improve access to key tourist and economic zones. It is designed to handle a daily traffic volume of 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles, including motorcycles, significantly increasing transportation efficiency and safety in the region.
