Bangkok: House Speaker Wan Muhammad Noor Matha addressed the recent parliamentary collapse, describing it as a unique situation while assuring the public of adjustments to prevent future occurrences. The session was adjourned due to a lack of quorum during the discussion of the Clean Air Management Act, a situation that Wan Nor believes will not be problematic on policy statement day as public scrutiny intensifies.
According to Thai News Agency, Wan Nor emphasized that ensuring a quorum is the responsibility of Members of Parliament. He pointed out that while such issues have occurred in the past, they are resolvable. The recent incident arose from disagreements over debating priorities between road subsidence and the Clean Air Act. Despite these challenges, Wan Nor remains optimistic about future sessions, citing the need for cooperation and adjustments within the House.
When questioned about the Pheu Thai Party's independent stance as the opposition, Wan Nor maintained that differing opinions are expected but should not hinder the House's functionality. He stressed that the House belongs to all members and encouraged adaptation over time.
Addressing blame for the adjournment, Wan Nor asserted that all parties share responsibility for ensuring meetings proceed smoothly. He expressed confidence that the upcoming government policy statements would not face quorum issues, given the public's anticipation and the necessity for governmental transparency.
The Speaker dismissed concerns over differing opinions possibly leading to further parliamentary disruptions, noting such differences are normal and cannot be forcibly aligned. Additionally, when queried about specific administrative requests involving Police Lieutenant Colonel Athitiya Benjapak, Wan Nor declined to comment and exited the conversation.
