Trending Burn Treatment Methods on Social Media: Truths and Myths Unveiled

Bangkok: Various methods for treating burns are being shared on social media, prompting discussions on their effectiveness and safety. From using ash mixed with oil to applying tilapia skin, these unconventional treatments are gaining attention. This article compiles key findings from the "Verify Before Sharing" program, clarifying common misconceptions and advising on correct first aid procedures for burns and scalds.

According to Thai News Agency, the question of using tilapia skin for burn wounds yields a mixed response. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Apichai Angsapat from Chulalongkorn University confirms that while tilapia skin is used in some countries, it is unsuitable in Thailand. The collagen in fish skin may aid in healing, but the risk of infection is high, especially in Thailand where human skin bank facilities are now available. There is a strong caution against self-applying fresh tilapia skin due to potential infections from aquatic organisms.

Clinical Professor Dr. Apirak Chuangsuwanich of the Burn and Wound Healing Association (Thailand) dismisses the notion of using ash mixed with oil for burns. Although ash might have disinfectant properties, its alkaline nature can damage tissues further and increase infection risk due to carbon residues acting as foreign substances. Similarly, the use of toothpaste is discouraged as it obscures the real condition of the wound, complicating medical assessment.

For correct first aid, Prof. Dr. Pornprom Muangman from Siriraj Hospital emphasizes the importance of immediate actions to minimize injury severity. Initially, remove the person from the heat source and cut away heat-retaining clothing. Metal accessories should also be removed to prevent further burns as the skin swells. Cooling the wound with clean, room-temperature water for 15-20 minutes is crucial, avoiding ice and warm water to prevent additional tissue damage. The wound should be gently dried and covered with a clean cloth or food wrap to protect against infection. Immediate medical attention is advised for wounds larger than a palm, as infection can lead to severe tissue damage.

In conclusion, unconventional burn treatments circulating on social media can pose significant risks, leading to infections or worse. Washing with clean, room-temperature water and consulting medical professionals is strongly advised for effective and safe burn treatment.
