Thailand to Showcase Soft Power and Cultural Identity at 2026 IMF-WBG Annual Meetings

Bangkok: Thailand is gearing up to host the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group (2026 IMF-WBG Annual Meetings), often referred to as the "Olympics of Finance".

According to Thai News Agency, the event is scheduled to take place from October 12-18, 2026, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok. It is expected to welcome over 15,000 delegates representing 191 countries. As the host nation, Thailand aims to leverage this global platform to showcase its rich cultural identity and "soft power" by integrating local communities' craftsmanship and culinary heritage into the summit.

To create a lasting impression, the conference will feature handwoven local textiles curated from 21 provinces and 26 communities across the country, showcasing a total of 37 unique heritage patterns. These traditional textiles will serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, being utilized as acoustic panels and decorative elements within the meeting rooms. Featured textile traditions include Buppha Borom Rachineenart (Queen Mother Floral Batik), Koh Yod and Maeng Mum (Spire and Spider), and Chang Ban Hat Siao (Hat Siao Elephant).

Thailand's culinary soft power will take center stage through a meticulously crafted menu featuring Geographical Indication (GI) certified ingredients and sustainable practices. Over 70% of the ingredients utilized throughout the event are sourced locally from grassroots communities to ensure eco-friendly and socially responsible catering. Delegates will experience the diverse flavors of Thailand's agricultural heritage through featured ingredients such as Tilapia from Chachoengsao, Cocoa from Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Vanilla and Macadamia from the Doi Tung Development Project in Chiang Rai.

Through this harmonious blend of economic dialogue, regional artistry, and curated gastronomy, Thailand aims to drive community income while reinforcing its cultural legacy on the global stage.
