Thailand Gears Up to Host 2026 IMF-World Bank Summit, Aiming to Establish Itself as a New Economic Hub

Bangkok: Thailand is preparing to host its first major IMF-World Bank summit in 35 years, highlighting opportunities to position the country as a new economic hub. According to Thai News Agency, the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group will take place from October 12-18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. This event marks an important milestone for Thailand, drawing nearly 20,000 delegates from over 191 countries, including central bank governors, prime ministers, finance ministers, private sector executives, and academics.

The last time Thailand hosted a similar event was in 1991, during a period of significant global transitions post-Cold War. At that time, Thailand was emerging as an economic "rising star" with nearly 10% GDP growth, which attracted substantial foreign direct investment. The upcoming 2026 summit aims to replicate this success and further Thailand's position on the global economic stage.

Associate Professor Dr. Somchai Pakphasanwiwat, an independent scholar in economics and international politics, highlights the historical significance of the IMF and World Bank, established at the Bretton Woods conference in 1944. The two organizations were created to restore the global economy post-World War II, with the World Bank focusing on national development loans and the IMF assisting countries facing financial crises.

The 2026 conference, themed "New Horizons," will address contemporary global challenges such as artificial intelligence and global warming. The focus will be on empowering people and building resilience, aiming to develop human resources and a digital economy capable of withstanding climate change, energy issues, and financial volatility.

Thailand's selection as the host underscores its growing economic strengths and its pivotal role as a hub connecting economies in the Global South. The summit presents an opportunity for Thailand to stimulate investment, improve financial institutions, and promote sustainable business practices. The event is expected to enhance Thailand's international image and bolster its economic transformation towards sustainable growth in the digital and AI era.
