Singapore: Thailand and Singapore have taken significant steps towards enhancing regional stability and sustainability by signing agreements focused on rice trade and public health collaboration. The agreements emphasize strategic cooperation in areas such as the green economy, food security, connectivity, digitalization, and global cooperation.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, a government spokesperson, announced that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore witnessed the signing of two memorandums of cooperation. The first is a Memorandum of Cooperation on Rice Trade between the two governments, aimed at boosting regional food security and trade. Under this agreement, Thailand will sell up to 100,000 tons of rice annually to Singapore, enhancing trade relations and providing better market access for Thai rice exporters.
The second agreement is a Memorandum of Understanding on Capacity Building for Healthcare Leadership in Urban Aging Care. This involves collaboration between the Somdej Phra Sangharaja Institute of Geriatrics and Singapore Health Services to exchange academic knowledge and innovations in geriatric care. This initiative aims to develop the skills and potential of Thai medical personnel.
Following the agreement signings, the two prime ministers held a joint press conference. Prime Minister Charnvirakul expressed his gratitude for the invitation and warm welcome extended by Singapore. The visit marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, highlighting the close ties they maintain.
The leaders discussed several key areas of cooperation. In terms of the green economy and sustainable development, both countries welcomed a Carbon Credit Trading Agreement, Singapore's first with an ASEAN member. They also discussed regional energy connectivity and renewable energy collaboration.
In economic matters, Thailand applauded Singapore's investment in high-tech industries and welcomed further collaboration in sectors such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, and biotech. The two countries also explored joint ventures in aircraft maintenance and overhaul.
In digital cooperation, Thailand and Singapore agreed to support bilateral and regional digital integration through agreements like the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement and the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement. The rice trade agreement signed today ensures the export of high-quality Thai rice to Singapore, bolstering food security.
On public health cooperation, the Memorandum of Understanding signed today will enhance the capacity of Thai medical personnel to address challenges posed by an aging population. The two countries also pledged to deepen cooperation in defense and security, including combating transnational and online crime.
Regionally, Thailand and Singapore committed to strengthening ASEAN's efficiency and resilience by promoting deeper economic integration and exploring ways to enhance connectivity across various sectors. Thailand aims to serve as a logistics hub connecting Southeast Asia with China and India.
Globally, Thailand and Singapore will adhere to a rules-based multilateral trading system amidst trade protectionism pressures. Additionally, Prime Minister Charnvirakul informed his Singaporean counterpart about the Thai-Cambodian border situation and reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to peaceful resolution with ASEAN support.
