Bangkok: The Department of Energy Business in Thailand is taking significant steps to encourage the use of E20 fuel, aiming to dispel widespread misconceptions about its impact on engines and to promote its benefits. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce the nation's dependency on oil imports, which could potentially save up to 60 billion baht annually.
According to Thai News Agency, the Director-General of the Department of Energy Business highlighted persistent public misconceptions about E20 fuel causing engine damage. Addressing these concerns is crucial to building consumer confidence and achieving the government's biofuel usage targets. The department is collaborating with the Thai Automotive Industry Association, 13 leading car manufacturers, 5 other car brands, and 7 major oil retailers to promote the benefits of E20 fuel.
Mr. Sarawut Kaewtathip, the Director-General, emphasized that Thailand is well-prepared to produce sufficient ethanol to support E20 fuel usage. Currently, over 4 million cars and about 80% of motorcycles in Thailand are compatible with E20. Despite this, surveys indicate a lack of awareness among consumers about their vehicles' compatibility and unfounded fears about E20's effect on engine performance. Addressing these concerns is seen as a priority for both the government and private sectors.
Mr. Adisak Chusuk, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Conservation, reported that Thailand houses 28 ethanol production plants, capable of producing 7 million liters of ethanol daily. Current usage stands at 3-4 million liters per day, showcasing the country's potential to meet additional ethanol demands for the fuel sector.
Ms. Yupin Boonsirichan, President of the Thai Automotive Industry Association, noted that 16 car brands, covering 273 models, and 5 motorcycle brands, totaling 138 models, are compatible with E20, which can substantially reduce reliance on imported fuels.
Mr. Suchart Ramas, President and CEO of PTT Oil and Retail Public Company Limited (OR), pointed out that more than 5,000 gas stations nationwide offer E20 fuel at a price 5 baht per liter lower than regular gasoline. Widespread E20 adoption is expected to diminish oil imports significantly.
Mr. Pitak Ratchakitprakarn, CEO of PTG Energy Public Company Limited, announced that PT's 1,216 gas stations are ready to retail E20 fuel starting from September 1st, further expanding access to this alternative energy source.
