Bangkok: The Thai women's volleyball team returned to Thailand today after a historic victory at the Asian Championship, securing their first-ever qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games. The team is set to arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 9:15 PM after defeating China in a thrilling 3-2 sets match to claim their fourth Asian Women's Volleyball Championship title.
According to Thai News Agency, the final match of the AVC Women's Volleyball Continental Championship 2026 took place at the Tianjin Gymnasium in Tianjin, China. The Thai team, ranked 17th globally and clad in red uniforms, faced off against the host nation, China, ranked 7th. Under the leadership of head coach Kiattipong Ratchatagriengkrai, the starting lineup included captain Pornpun Guedparach, along with Sasipaporn Chantavisut, Thatdao Nuekjeng, Pimphichaya Kokram, Chatchuon Moksri, and Kaewkallaya Kamulthala, with Piyanut Pannoy serving as the libero. China's team was captained by Gong Xiangyu, featuring star hitters Xuan Yushan and Wu Mengjie.
The match was tightly contested, with both teams winning two sets each, leading to a decisive fifth set. The Thai team excelled in both offense and defense, whereas China struggled with their defensive plays. Thailand clinched the final set 15-10, culminating in a 3-2 victory (25-20, 11-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-10). This triumph marked Thailand's fourth Asian Cup title, following previous wins in 2009, 2013, and 2023, and ensured their participation in the 2028 Olympic Games in the USA and the 2027 Women's World Volleyball Championship. Sasipaporn Chantavisut emerged as the top scorer with 28 points and delivered two crucial aces in the final set. Following the match, the players and Coach Ott were visibly emotional as they celebrated their achievement.
The tournament saw several Thai players receiving individual accolades. Pornpun Guedparach was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Setter, Sasipaporn Chantavisut earned the Best Outside Hitter award, and Thaddao Nuekjaeng was recognized as the Best Middle Blocker.
Head coach Kiattipong Ratchatagriengkrai expressed his joy and pride, stating that the dream of reaching the Olympics, which began in 2004, had finally been realized. He attributed their success to faith, perseverance, and mindfulness, acknowledging the challenges they overcame.
Sasiporn, who was the highest scorer, shared her singular focus on reaching the Olympics during the competition. Meanwhile, Chatchu-on expressed her amazement at the team's achievement, emphasizing the significance of witnessing their success firsthand on the field.
In recognition of their victory, the National Sports Development Fund awarded 11.76 million baht to the team, following established criteria. The 14 athletes each received 600,000 baht, totaling 8.4 million baht, while the coaches and sports association received 840,000 baht and 2.52 million baht, respectively.
Additionally, Mr. Pichit Potharamik, a major shareholder of JAS and MONO, is set to donate 5 million baht to the team. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also extended his congratulations, highlighting the pride and joy this achievement brings to the Thai people. The nation eagerly awaits the team's return tonight.
