Thai Navy Develops Lightweight Radiation Protection Suit

Bangkok:Naval medical experts in Thailand have achieved a significant breakthrough by inventing the first "radiation protection suit made of a special material that is five times lighter than lead." This innovative suit, developed at Somdej Phra Pinklao Hospital under the Royal Thai Navy, marks a pivotal advancement in Thai medical practice.

According to Thai News Agency, the research and development of this highly effective radiation protection suit were led by Navy Captain Dr. Thalingkiat Jamuthirarat. The suit's key feature is its exceptional lightness, weighing five times less than traditional lead-based protection. This reduction in weight substantially decreases physical strain and fatigue on doctors and medical personnel during surgeries or treatments that involve prolonged exposure to radiation.

The suit offers radiation protection equivalent to that of lead, ensuring both safety and effectiveness. As a domestically produced innovation, it is the first of its kind in Thailand, reducing the country's dependence on imported materials and serving as a source of national pride. Additionally, the suit's flexibility, durability, and adaptability make it well-suited for practical use in operating rooms.

The Royal Thai Navy remains dedicated to enhancing its capabilities across various domains, including the protection of personnel and the public. This commitment extends to supporting medical research and innovation, with the aim of sustainably improving the quality of life and public health in Thailand.
