Bangkok:The Ministry of Commerce has confirmed that there are no product shortages and no evidence of panic buying in Thailand. Despite an increase in sales, authorities have stated that consumer goods remain in ample supply.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Internal Trade has reported sufficient availability of consumer goods, with no indications of shortages. Although sales have risen compared to normal periods, they cannot conclusively attribute this to panic buying. Mr. Wattanasak Suea-iam, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, emphasized ongoing monitoring of consumer goods prices and quantities, especially in light of recommendations for citizens to stock up on essentials for emergencies. Additionally, the Ministry of Interior has advised citizens in Thailand to prepare for potential floods or disasters by assembling emergency kits.
A recent meeting on November 4th with various stakeholders, including wholesalers, retailers, and manufacturers, revealed an overall sales increase due to several factors. These include flooding in certain areas, early-month salary spending, and government welfare programs. Notably, local department stores experienced about a 5% sales increase. Despite this, it is premature to link these increases directly to panic buying.
Mr. Wattanasak assured that businesses have stockpiled goods adequately and are ready to meet demand. Both wholesalers and manufacturers have prepared their supply chains and production capacities to handle rising demand, maintaining sufficient consumer goods supply without signs of shortages.
Furthermore, the Department of Internal Trade addressed potential risks to storage and distribution systems, such as attacks on refrigeration and temperature control systems. No incidents have been reported, but businesses are encouraged to remain vigilant and implement contingency measures to ensure continuous supply chain operations.
The public is encouraged to report any unfair sales practices to the Department of Internal Trade's hotline at 1569, enabling officials to investigate and take necessary legal actions.
